Located in western Maine just east of the village of Stratton about 40 miles north of Farmington, Bigelow Preserve includes over 36,000 acres of public land. The route of the Safford Brook Trail approximately follows the old "Dead River Route" part of the A.T. from the 1930s before the creation of Flagstaff Lake. Avery and West Peak are the tallest peaks on the Bigelow Mountain Ridge just outside of Stratton, Maine. The highest of these at 4,150 feet is West Peak, one of only 10 Maine summits over 4,000 feet in elevation. - The Horns Pond Trail was a real treat to hike, it was a pretty trail that gradually climbed up to the ridge, passing by an open boggy area with a great view up to South Horn. Once on the Fire Wardens Trail we hiked over mostly easy grades on an old road followed by a nice trail up through the woods to the Horns Pond Trail. Follow the Fire Warden's Trail down for 1.6 miles until you reach the Stratton Brook Campsite, and continue past on the dirt road for roughly half a mile until you reach the parking area.
